How it works
Drop in a photo and the background is cut away, leaving a see-through PNG you can place on anything. The first time you use this page it downloads a small cut-out engine (about 19 MB) and keeps it for next time; after that it starts straight away. Each photo takes a few seconds, and the bar shows it is working. Clear photos of a single person, product or animal work best; busy scenes and fine hair are harder.
How to use it
- Drop a photo onto the box, or press Choose photos.
- Watch the bar. The first time, the page downloads its cut-out engine and the bar counts the megabytes; after that it goes straight to cutting out.
- When it says Background removed, the photo appears on a checkerboard, which means see-through.
- Press Save to get a PNG with no background. Drop it into a slide, a document or a design.
Questions people ask
What kind of photo works best?
A clear subject that stands out from its background, such as a person, a pet or a product. Busy backgrounds, and fine details like wisps of hair, are harder, so the edge may be less neat.
Why does it download something the first time?
The cut-out is done by a small program that runs on your own device, so it has to be downloaded once. It is about 19 MB. Your browser keeps it, so the next time the page starts straight away.
How long does it take?
A few seconds per photo on a typical computer. Older computers and phones take longer. The bar and the seconds counter show that the page is working, and it never freezes.
What file do I get?
A PNG the same size as your photo, with a see-through background. PNG is the kind of picture that can be see-through.
Can I use iPhone photos?
Yes. iPhone photos are converted first and then cut out.
Is my photo uploaded?
No. The engine runs inside your browser, so your photo never leaves your device.
