Most free online tools work by sending your file to someone else's computer, doing the job there and sending the result back. Handy File Tools works differently: the work happens inside your own browser. This guide explains why that matters and how you can check it yourself.
Two ways an online tool can work
In the first way, your file is uploaded to a server, processed, and then downloaded again. That means a copy of your photo or document, however briefly, sits on a machine you do not control. In the second way, the page contains the program, your browser runs it, and the file never leaves your device. The result is the same on screen, but the privacy is quite different.
Every tool on this site uses the second way. The conversion, the compression, the cut-outs and the PDF-making all happen on your own computer or phone.
Why it matters
Photos of your family, scans of identity documents, bank statements, contracts and medical letters are exactly the kinds of files that people run through free tools without thinking. With a browser-only tool, there is no upload to intercept, no copy to be stored by mistake, and no account to leak. It is also usually faster, because there is no waiting for a large file to travel across the internet and back.
A simple test you can do
You do not have to take our word for it. Here is a test that works for any tool:
- Open the tool's page and wait for it to finish loading.
- Turn off your Wi-Fi or switch on aeroplane mode.
- Drop in a photo and use the tool.
- If it still works, the work is happening on your device. If it fails, or spins forever, it needs the internet to process your file.
Two honest exceptions
A few of our tools fetch a small helper the first time you use them. Remove background downloads its cut-out engine of about 19 megabytes, and Image to text downloads a small reading file for each language. Compress video and MOV to MP4's Most compatible choice need a modern browser. These downloads bring the program to your computer; they do not send your file anywhere. Once they are saved by your browser, the page can work offline.
What we still cannot see
Because processing happens on your device, we never receive your files, and we cannot recover them if you lose them. Keep your originals. If you close the tab before saving, the results are gone, and you have to run the job again. That is the trade for privacy, and for most people it is a good one.
Good habits wherever you work
Even with private tools, a few habits help. Delete files you no longer need from your downloads folder, especially scans of documents. Use a trusted, up-to-date browser. Be cautious about any page that asks you to create an account or install software just to convert a file. And check our Privacy page, which explains what the site does and does not collect.
